How far from the house does a fire pit have to be in Frisco?
Frisco's permit checklist wants a built fire pit 15 feet from the house and 10 feet from anything that can burn, measured from the outer edge of the pit. A masonry outdoor fireplace built to the building code is treated differently and can sit closer. Either one goes on a building permit with a marked survey.
What Frisco wants on the permit
Frisco gives fire pits and outdoor fireplaces their own short lists on its residential alteration checklist. Both file online as an Other Home Improvements permit.
- For a fire pit, the application carries the survey with the pit marked and its distance to every property line, an elevation with dimensions, a copy of the instruction manual, and a certificate showing the unit meets its ANSI safety standard. City of Frisco Residential Alteration Submittal Requirements, Form 4038, February 2026, Fire pit, p. 2
- For an outdoor fireplace, the city wants the same marked survey plus a front elevation with its real shape and height, the materials, and the footing. The plans say whether it burns natural gas or wood, and a fireplace built around a firebox insert includes the maker's warranty. City of Frisco Residential Alteration Submittal Requirements, Form 4038, February 2026, Fireplace (outdoor), p. 2
- The fee schedule lists fireplaces under Outdoor Amenity. It starts at $75, adds $25 for each additional element, and stops at $150. Start before the permit issues and the fee doubles. City of Frisco Permit, Inspection and Miscellaneous Consolidated Fee Schedule, effective 10/1/2026, Outdoor Improvements, p. 3; Miscellaneous Building Permit Fees, p. 4
- A contractor needs a current Frisco registration before most permits can even be submitted. The registration number runs out on the same day as the contractor's liability insurance, and every subcontractor is checked before the permit issues. City of Frisco, Contractor Registration Information
- The checklist closes both the fire pit and the fireplace entries with a note that some subdivisions require HOA approval, and tells the owner to contact the HOA. City of Frisco Residential Alteration Submittal Requirements, Form 4038, February 2026

Where the fire can go
- Frisco cites the fire code for its spacing: a fire pit 15 feet from the main house and 10 feet from any combustible item, measured from the outside of the pit to the house or the item. A unit that does not meet the fire code has to meet ANSI requirements instead. City of Frisco Residential Alteration Submittal Requirements, Form 4038, February 2026, Fire pit, p. 2
- Frisco's fire code text bars a permanent recreational fire pit within 10 feet of a structure or combustible material, and leaves out outdoor fireplaces built to the building code. That is why a masonry fireplace can stand at the edge of a patio where a pit cannot. We hold pits to the checklist's 15 feet from the house. City of Frisco Fire Prevention FAQ, Is open burning permitted in the city?, 307.4.4
- Someone stays with any recreational fire or portable fireplace until it is out, with a fire extinguisher rated at least 4-A, a garden hose, a water barrel, or dirt or sand ready to use. City of Frisco Fire Prevention FAQ, Is open burning permitted in the city?, 307.5
- Burning brush or holding a bonfire is open burning. It needs a fire code permit that only the landowner can get, and Frisco moved the distance from any structure out to 300 feet, which no suburban back yard has. A gas fire beside the pool
Fire bowls and gas features on a pool deck are reviewed on the pool permit, and Frisco's pool checklist has its own line for them.
- Each gas fire feature on a pool permit comes with the maker's spec sheet and a certificate that it meets the national safety standard for gas fire features (ANSI Z21.42 or Z21.97). It goes where the maker's instructions say. City of Frisco Residential Swimming Pools and Spas Submittal Requirements and Inspection Checklist, Form 107, July 2026, Submittal item J
- A fire feature without that certificate is treated as a fire pit, so it has to sit at least 15 feet from the house and 10 feet from anything combustible, pool deck or not. City of Frisco Residential Swimming Pools and Spas Submittal Requirements and Inspection Checklist, Form 107, July 2026, Submittal item J
- At the pool's gas inspection, the inspector checks that the line is buried 18 inches deep with a tracer wire and has passed a pressure test before the trench closes. Frisco Questions
What people in Frisco ask us
Do I need a permit for a fire pit in Frisco?
For a built one, yes. It files online with a marked survey, an elevation, the instruction manual and the ANSI certificate. We assemble the set and file it.
Can my fire pit go under the patio cover or pergola?
No. A pit keeps 15 feet from the house and 10 feet from anything that burns, and a wood cover counts. If you want fire under the roof, a masonry fireplace built to the building code is the route Frisco leaves open.
Gas or wood: what works best in Frisco?
Both are allowed. Gas is the easier fit near a pool or a cover, as long as the burner carries its ANSI certificate. Wood gives you the real fire and needs the full spacing, plus a hose or extinguisher on hand every time it is lit.
Can I have a bonfire or burn yard waste in my back yard?
Not on a normal Frisco lot. That is open burning, which takes a fire permit and 300 feet from any structure. A fire pit or fireplace is the legal way to have a fire at home.
How long does a fire pit or outdoor fireplace take in Frisco?
A gas pit or fire table runs about 1 to 2 weeks on site. A masonry fireplace runs about 3 to 6 weeks, because the footing cures before the stone goes up. The permit review comes first, and we give you its timing when we file.
How do you price a fire pit or fireplace in Frisco?
From a walk of the yard. Pit or fireplace, gas or wood, how far gas has to run and the stone you pick move the number. It is priced in writing, and the price does not move unless the scope does.
