Does a fence repair in Allen need a permit?
Plan on it. Allen's list of work that needs no permit has no line for fences and no allowance for repairs, so we confirm with Building and Permitting before rebuilding any section. Whatever goes back in follows the city's fence guideline, including metal posts in concrete.
Repairs, permits and inspections
- Allen publishes its own list of work that needs no permit. Low freestanding decks, small sheds, window awnings and temporary pools are on it. Fences are not, and nothing on it covers fence repair. City of Allen, Residential Services, Work Exempt from Permits, R105.2
- A fence permit is $75 on the city's fee schedule, filed under minor alterations to a house, duplex or townhome. A failed inspection adds a reinspection fee that starts at $75 and goes up with each repeat. City of Allen Fee Schedule, last updated June 16, 2025, Building Permit Fees
- A homeowner doing the work pulls the permit with a Homeowner's Affidavit. Hire a contractor and the contractor gets the permit before any work starts. City of Allen, Residential Services
- Contractors register with Allen every year, $50, and the forms go in through the Citizen Self-Service portal. City of Allen, Contractor Registration
- The inspections a permit needs are printed on its last pages. Book them in the portal, or call between 8 and 9 a.m. on the day to get a time window. City of Allen, Residential Services

Corners, alleys and lot lines
- At an alley, a street or an intersection, the corner stays open for 20 feet back from where the curb lines would meet. The guideline also holds 200 feet of sight distance at street intersections. City of Allen Residential Fence Guideline, June 2026
- On a lot with an alley, the guideline keeps the 3 feet beside each side lot line free of obstructions like driveways and retaining walls. Without an alley, that 3 foot strip runs along the rear line too. City of Allen Residential Fence Guideline, June 2026
- A sliding gate across a rear entry drive has to match one of the city's two trash pickup layouts, and the application has to say which one. City of Allen Residential Fence Guideline, June 2026

Around a pool
Allen's pool guideline, revised July 2026, treats the fence and the house as one barrier.
- The pool has to be surrounded on every side by a fence or wall at least 4 feet tall, and every gate in it closes and latches by itself. City of Allen Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Guideline, July 2026
- Between the house and the pool, the owner picks one of two protections: self-closing, self-latching doors with the latch 48 to 54 inches above the floor, or a UL 2017 alarm on every door and every operable window with a sill under 48 inches that sounds for at least 30 seconds. City of Allen Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Guideline, July 2026
- The homeowner certifies that choice on a form signed in front of a notary. It sits in the permit packet on site at the pre-plaster inspection, and the city does a final before the pool goes into use. City of Allen Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Guideline, July 2026
- Neither the pool nor its deck may sit in a drainage, utility or other easement. The pool stays 3 feet off the side property lines and 5 feet from the house. City of Allen Residential Swimming Pool and Spa Guideline, July 2026

Allen Questions
What people in Allen ask us
Can I replace a few pickets on my Allen fence without a permit?
Allen does not publish a repair allowance for fences, so we ask Building and Permitting before calling any repair permit-free. If posts are coming out, the new ones are metal set in concrete, because the city's guideline requires it on every fence.
Who books the inspections on an Allen fence permit?
Whoever holds the permit. The list is printed on the permit's last pages, and you book through the city's portal or by phone between 8 and 9 a.m. on the day.
My fence is on a corner lot. What changes?
The corner stays clear for 20 feet back from where the curb lines would meet, at a street, an alley or an intersection. We lay out the corner before we pull a single post.
How tall does a pool fence have to be in Allen?
The pool guideline and the fence guideline both say at least 4 feet, with gates that close and latch themselves. We still check the current code text with the city before we build one.
How long does a fence repair take in Allen?
Most repairs take 1 to 2 days on site once the permit is issued and materials are in. Replacing a whole run is usually 1 to 3 days.
How do you price a fence repair in Allen?
From the walk. We check every post, mark which ones stay, and send one written price. It holds unless the scope changes.
