Where the fire goes gets decided before what it looks like.

A masonry fireplace is the heaviest thing on most patios. It needs its own footing, not the patio slab, and on North Texas clay that footing is designed for soil that swells and shrinks under it. Build it on a thin slab and the crack shows up in the first dry summer.

Then the clearances. Cities set how close an open fire can be to the house and to anything that burns, and the numbers differ: Rockwall wants recreational fires 25 ft from any structure, and Frisco keeps permanent fire pits 10 ft from structures and combustibles. A wood fireplace under a patio cover needs a chimney that clears the roof. A gas feature needs a gas line run by a licensed plumber, pressure-tested, and a burner listed for where it sits. Those decide whether you want a fireplace or a pit, and gas or wood.

We build masonry fireplaces, built-in fire pits and fire tables, gas or wood, on their own or with the patio cover and outdoor kitchen around them. A steel pit from a store set on pavers is not work we take.

How the planning works

Measured, drawn and picked before anything comes out.

  1. Step 1

    Gas or wood, and where

How you want to use it, how close to the house and the cover it can sit under your city's rules, and where the smoke goes on the usual south wind. That settles fireplace or pit, and gas or wood.

  2. Step 2

    Footing and structure

A footing sized for the masonry and designed for the soil, separate from the patio slab. Under a cover, the chimney route through or past the roof framing is drawn before the footing is poured.

  3. Step 3

    Gas, power and the chimney

The gas run from the meter, the valve or ignition, any outlet or lighting on the fireplace face, and the flue and cap for a wood fire. Each is permitted and inspected.

  4. Step 4

    Written scope, permit, build

One price in writing with the masonry, veneer, hearth and cap named. The permit is pulled before the footing is dug.

Finish levels

Mid-grade or high-end, named by what goes in.

Most rooms mix the two. Tell us where you want to spend and where you do not, and the written scope names every material either way.

Mid-grade

  • Built-in fire pit in stone or block with a steel liner, on its own footing
  • Gas burner ring with a manual key valve
  • Manufactured stone or stucco veneer
  • Cast concrete or stone cap

High-end

  • Full masonry fireplace with a chimney carried above the cover roof, in natural stone
  • Fire table or linear gas burner with electronic ignition and a remote
  • Natural stone hearth and mantel, with a wood box built into the masonry
  • Fire pit built into a seat wall with a travertine or stone surround
  • Lighting and a TV outlet wired into the fireplace face

A wood fire under a roof needs a real chimney. A gas fire table is the easier fit under a cover or near a pool.

Code and permits

Read from the model codes on the dates linked. Each city adopts its own edition with its own amendments, so we confirm the rules for your address before we pull the permit.

In every job

  • Placement checked against your city's fire clearances and setbacks before design
  • A footing designed for the masonry, separate from the patio slab
  • Gas line run by a licensed plumber, pressure-tested and inspected
  • Firebrick and refractory materials inside the firebox, veneer and cap outside
  • Permit and inspections for the structure, the gas and any electrical
  • The punch list before final payment, and a one-year workmanship warranty

How we quote it

We do not publish prices or ranges. Every job is measured and built for your house, so a number off a website would be a guess.

A site walk, then a written scope back within five business days. The scope names the work, the materials and the price, and the price does not move unless the scope does.

Anything found behind a wall or under a slab that changes the work gets priced and approved before we touch it. That is a change of work, in writing, not a surprise on the final invoice.

Payment is by ACH, card, check or cash, on the schedule written into the contract.

What Moves the Number

Up and down, before you ask for a quote.

Pushes price up

  • A full masonry fireplace and chimney rather than a pit
  • Carrying the chimney through or above a patio cover roof
  • A long gas run from the meter
  • Natural stone veneer and a stone hearth
  • Electronic ignition and remote control
  • Seat walls built around a pit

Keeps price down

  • A gas pit or fire table close to the meter
  • Manufactured stone or stucco veneer
  • A pit out in the open yard, away from the house and the cover
  • Building it with the patio or cover, when the gas line and footing go in anyway
  • A manual key valve instead of electronic ignition

Common Questions

Fireplaces and Fire Pits questions, answered

Can I put an outdoor fireplace under my patio cover?

Yes, when it is built for it. A wood-burning fireplace under a roof needs a chimney that runs up through or past the cover and clears the roof, with the right clearance from the ceiling framing. A gas fireplace or fire table listed for covered use is often the simpler answer. An open fire pit belongs out in the yard, not under the roof.

How far does a fire pit have to be from the house?

It depends on the city. Rockwall requires recreational fires to be at least 25 ft from any structure, with a permit and a site plan. Frisco keeps permanent fire pits at least 10 ft from structures and combustible material, and an outdoor fireplace built to code is treated differently from a pit. We check your city's rule before we pick the spot.

Gas or wood: which should I choose?

Gas lights at a switch or a key, puts out little smoke, shuts off when you are done and can sit closer to a cover where the burner is listed for it. It needs a gas line. Wood gives you the crackle and the smell, and needs a chimney or real distance from the house, plus somewhere to keep the wood dry. Many people put a gas table by the pool and a wood pit farther out.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor fireplace?

Usually, and always for the gas line. Royse City permits outdoor fireplaces with a site plan, a foundation plan, masonry details, elevations and electrical and plumbing details, and places them under the same setbacks as the house. Rockwall requires a permit for open recreational fires. We pull the permits and schedule the gas inspection.

Can you build a fire feature by the pool?

Yes, usually gas. Pool areas get a closer look: Frisco's pool permit asks for an ANSI Z21.42 or Z21.97 certificate on gas fire appliances, and treats a fire device without one as a fire pit that has to sit 15 ft from the house and 10 ft from anything combustible. We pick the burner and the spot with that in mind, and coordinate with the deck and the coping.

Will an outdoor fireplace crack on clay soil?

Not if the footing is right. The fireplace sits on a footing designed for the masonry and the soil, separate from the patio slab, with a joint between them so the two can move on their own. Water is kept away from the base. Most cracked outdoor fireplaces were set on a patio slab that was never meant to carry them.

How long does an outdoor fireplace take?

A gas fire pit or table is usually 1 to 2 weeks on site. A masonry fireplace with a chimney is usually 3 to 6 weeks, because the footing cures before the masonry starts and the masonry goes up in lifts. The permit, the gas inspection and stone lead times sit around those.

How is an outdoor fireplace priced?

From a walk of the yard, in writing. Fireplace or pit, gas or wood, the chimney route, the length of the gas run and the stone you pick move it most. Once it is in writing, it holds unless the scope changes.
