A fence is priced by the foot and sold by the job.
Two numbers decide a fence: the rate per linear foot and the project minimum. The rate covers the fence. The minimum covers getting a crew, a truck, and a load of cedar to your house, which costs the same whether the run is 40 feet or 140.
That is why a short run looks expensive per foot and a long one looks cheap. Nothing about the fence changed. The mobilization just got spread over more of it.
Ask for the run length and the height and you have your number before anyone comes out.

All-in, covering labor, materials, normal mobilization, protection of the areas we work around, coordination and cleanup. These are budgeting standards, not a quote: the number on your contract comes from a site walk.

How we quote it
A site walk, then a written scope back within five business days. The scope names the work, the materials and the price, and the price does not move unless the scope does.
Anything found behind a wall or under a slab that changes the work gets priced and approved before we touch it. That is a change of work, in writing, not a surprise on the final invoice.
Payment is by ACH, card, check or cash, on the schedule written into the contract.

- Horizontal boards, which need straighter stock and tighter posts to look right

- Short runs, where the minimum does the work rather than the rate

What does a cedar fence cost?
Six foot board-on-board runs $65 per linear foot with a $3,500 project minimum, and eight foot runs $76 per linear foot with a $4,500 minimum. If your posts are sound and only the rails and pickets are failing, that drops to $40 per linear foot on the same $3,500 minimum. Horizontal cedar on aluminum posts is $72 per linear foot with a $6,000 minimum. All-in, including demo, haul-off, gates and hardware.
Why is there a minimum?
Because a crew, a truck, and a cedar delivery cost the same whether they are building 40 feet or 140. The minimum is what it takes to show up and do the job properly. On a long run you never see it, because the rate per foot passes it well before the fence is finished. On a short run it is the price.
Can you reuse my existing posts?
Often, and it is the cheapest honest version of this job. If the posts are plumb, solid at the ground line, and set in concrete, we replace the rails and pickets around them and you pay $40 per linear foot instead of $65. We check them at the walk and tell you which ones will not make it. Any post found unsound after demo is priced as a change of work before we touch it.
Do you stain the fence?
New pickets come factory pre-stained, so the finish is even and the color is in the price. Staining an existing run so the old fence matches the new section is separate, quoted on the length and the condition of what is already there. A weathered fence takes more material and more time than a new one.
How long does a fence take?
Most residential runs are one to three days on site once materials are in. Demo and post setting is day one, the concrete cures overnight, and the rails, pickets and gates go on after that. Wrought iron repair runs longer because each post has to be excavated and evaluated before anything is welded.
Do I need a permit for a fence?
It depends on the city and the height. Several municipalities we work in require a permit above six feet, and most HOAs have their own approval on style, height and stain color regardless of what the city says. We tell you which applies at the walk rather than after the posts are set.
