What does an outdoor kitchen in Plano need from the city?
Plano has no outdoor kitchen permit of its own. The structure over it is a building permit, the gas line runs at least 18 inches underground, and the electrical and plumbing go in under licensed trades registered with the city. A wood fire stays 25 feet from the house; a grill is not held to that rule.
Which Plano permits an outdoor kitchen falls under
- Plano's fee schedule has no outdoor kitchen line. A detached structure under 400 square feet is an accessory structure at $75, and electrical and mechanical work is added to a residential permit where it applies. City of Plano Ordinance No. 2025-11-4, Building Inspections Department Fee Schedule
- A cover over the kitchen goes in with its electrical drawn: ceiling fans, switches and added outlets are shown on the plan set, along with how the posts are anchored and how deep the footings go. City of Plano Residential Patio Cover Permit Requirements and Checklist, rev. 02/03/2023
- An accessory building may not sit in the required side yard where the side lot line runs along a street, and never in an easement or right of way. City of Plano Residential Patio Cover Permit Requirements and Checklist, rev. 02/03/2023
- The permit holder has to request and pass every inspection on the list. Plano can put a contractor's registration on hold for leaving inspections unfinished. City of Plano Residential Patio Cover Permit Requirements and Checklist, rev. 02/03/2023
- A permit that sees no activity for 180 days is treated as abandoned. It can be renewed for another 180 days on request, with renewal fees. City of Plano Residential Patio Cover Permit Requirements and Checklist, rev. 02/03/2023

Gas, power and the trench
- Plano's amendments to the 2024 residential code put underground gas piping at least 18 inches below grade. City of Plano Ordinance No. 2025-6-15, 2024 International Residential Code with local amendments, G2415.12
- An electrical contractor registers with Plano under a Texas master electrician's license. A plumbing contractor needs a current state license and pays no city registration fee. City of Plano Contractor Registration Requirements, revised 01/16/20
- The general contractor registers as well, at $100 a year. City of Plano Contractor Registration Requirements, revised 01/16/20
- Gas and electric service come after the trades pass. Plano authorizes the utility releases for electricity and gas once the final trade approvals are in. City of Plano Customer's Guide to the Building Permit Process, revised 10/8/2024
- Plano's outdoor improvements page carries one instruction in its body: call before you dig. A gas trench across the yard is exactly that. City of Plano, Outdoor Improvements

How close a fire can sit to the house
Plano bans open burning outright. What it allows near a home depends on what is burning and what it burns in.
- A wood fire in a pit or open container is a recreational fire. It needs no permit, but it has to be at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material, and no bigger than 3 feet across and 2 feet high. City of Plano, Rules for Outside Fires
- Fuel burned in a barbecue grill is left out of the recreational fire definition, so the 25 foot rule governs wood fires, not the grill on your island. City of Plano, Rules for Outside Fires
- A portable outdoor fireplace burning solid fuel is kept 15 feet from structures elsewhere, but at one- and two-family homes the fire code does not regulate it. Plano tells homeowners to follow the maker's instructions. City of Plano, Rules for Outside Fires

Plano Questions
What people in Plano ask us
Is there an outdoor kitchen permit in Plano?
No single one. The cover or structure is a building permit, and the gas, electrical and plumbing are trade work done by licensed contractors registered with the city. We file them together so the inspections line up.
How deep does the gas line to my grill have to be in Plano?
At least 18 inches below grade. Plano's 2024 code amendments set that depth for underground gas piping.
Can I put a wood fire pit next to my outdoor kitchen?
Not within 25 feet of the house, the cover or anything that burns. Plano's outside fire rules set that distance for wood fires. The grill itself is not held to it.
When does the gas get turned on?
After the trade inspections pass. Plano releases gas and electric service on final trade approval, so the last inspection is the one that lets you cook.
How long does an outdoor kitchen take in Plano?
The island runs about 1 to 2 weeks on site once the appliances are on hand. Permits, trenching and the trade inspections add to that, and you get the full sequence before we start.
How do you price an outdoor kitchen in Plano?
In writing, after we walk the yard and measure the runs to the gas meter and the panel. The price holds unless the scope changes.
