Who does custom carpentry in Fort Worth, and does a built-in need a permit?
We do: built-ins drawn for the room and built to fit it. Fort Worth treats cabinets, shelving and finish work as permit free. Recess a piece into a wall, replace 16 square feet or more of drywall, or add outlets and lights, and it becomes a remodel permit with trade permits beside it.
When carpentry turns into a permit
- Fort Worth's building administrative code lists painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinet and countertop replacement and similar finish work as needing no permit. City of Fort Worth Building Administrative Code, Ordinance No. 25387-03-2022, 105.2, Building, item 7
- The city's homeowner permitting page calls cabinets, countertops and shelving cosmetic work, with no permit. City of Fort Worth, Residential Permitting
- The same page draws the line at walls: changing or repairing walls or floors, or replacing 16 square feet or more of drywall on any one wall or ceiling, needs a permit. A bookcase set into the wall usually crosses it. City of Fort Worth, Residential Permitting
- That work files as a Residential Remodel Construction Permit, which covers inside or outside remodeling of a house, duplex or townhome. City of Fort Worth, Permit Description: Residential, 6/29/2020
Read from the city’s own documents on the dates linked. Codes and fees change and city staff interpret them, so we confirm for your address before we pull the permit.
What the remodel permit asks for
- The packet wants floor plans of the room as it is and as it will be, with every room labeled. A room labeled as a bonus room is inspected as a bedroom. City of Fort Worth, Submittal Requirements for Residential Remodels, 05/27/2026
- When wiring changes, the plans show outlet and switch locations, which outlets are GFI, and where the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are. City of Fort Worth, Submittal Requirements for Residential Remodels, 05/27/2026
- The remodel permit has a minimum fee set by the number of trades: $119 for one and $238 for two. A technology fee of $16.87 rides on every permit. These are city fees, not our price. City of Fort Worth Development Fee Schedule, adopted September 15, 2026, effective October 1, 2026, Table 1A-1 and Table 1-B
- Fort Worth sets a goal of 7 business days for first review comments on a complete residential application. City of Fort Worth, Review Timeframes

Who pulls it, and the trades
- Anyone who pulls a building or electrical permit has to hold a current Fort Worth contractor registration. For electrical work, that takes a Texas electrical contractor's license. City of Fort Worth, Contractor Registration
- The one exception is an owner working on the single-family home they own and live in. A registration runs one year from the day it is issued, so it is fair to ask any bidder whether theirs is current. City of Fort Worth, Contractor Registration
- A building permit does not cover the trades. Lights in a bookcase or power for a media wall take a separate electrical permit, inspected on its own. City of Fort Worth, Inspections
- New wiring follows the 2026 National Electrical Code, which Fort Worth put into effect on September 1, 2026. City of Fort Worth, Building and Energy Codes
- A permit is void after 180 days unless a required inspection has been approved, so a long shop build is timed to keep it alive. City of Fort Worth Building Administrative Code, Ordinance No. 25387-03-2022, 105.5
Read from the city’s own documents on the dates linked. Codes and fees change and city staff interpret them, so we confirm for your address before we pull the permit.
Fort Worth Questions
What people in Fort Worth ask us
Do built-in bookcases need a permit in Fort Worth?
Not when the cabinets and shelves stand against a finished wall. Fort Worth treats that as finish work. Set them into the wall, open up 16 square feet or more of drywall, or add power, and it is a remodel permit.
My built-in has lights and outlets. What changes?
The wiring takes its own electrical permit, pulled by a licensed electrician registered with the city, with its own inspection.
Do you install store-bought cabinets or fix old ones?
No. Every piece we make is drawn for your room and built to fit it, from the first measurement to the last coat of finish.
How long does a built-in take in Fort Worth?
The pieces are built after you approve the drawings. On site, one wall of built-ins is usually 3 to 5 working days, and a fully paneled room runs 1 to 3 weeks. When a permit is needed, the city aims for first comments within 7 business days.
How do you price custom carpentry in Fort Worth?
We measure the room, talk through the piece and send the price in writing. How much wall it covers, the wood, the finish, the number of doors and drawers, and any wiring matter most. Once the scope is agreed, that written price holds.
