When (and How Often) to Stain a Deck in North Texas

The best months to stain a deck in North Texas, how often to re-stain, how to tell when your wood is ready, and what deck staining typically costs.

Stained cedar deck with steps wrapping a mature tree.

The right months, the right intervals, and how to tell your wood is actually ready for stain, practical guidance from a local crew.

In North Texas, the sweet spots for staining are spring (roughly March through May) and fall (October into November), mild temperatures, wood dry enough to drink in the stain, and a decent shot at a rain-free window. Re-stain decks every 2 to 3 years and fences every 3 to 5, sooner on surfaces that bake in south or west sun. Here's how to time it right.

The spring and fall windows

Why not summer? Stain applied to a 140°F deck board flashes off before it can penetrate, leaving a thin, streaky finish that fails early. Most stain manufacturers want surface and air temperatures roughly between 50°F and 90°F, which in our part of Texas means spring and fall, or early mornings on the shoulders of those seasons.

Why not right after rain? Stain needs dry wood. After a soaking rain, give a deck at least 24 to 48 hours of dry weather (more in cool, shady spots) before staining, and check the forecast for another day or two of dry weather after application so the finish can cure.

New wood needs to season. Fresh pressure-treated lumber comes wet from the treatment process and can need weeks to a few months to dry out before it will take stain. Cedar is usually ready sooner. Don't stain a brand-new deck on a calendar date, stain it when the wood is ready (see the tests below).

How to tell the wood is ready

The sprinkle test. Pour a little water on a board. If it beads up and sits, the wood is either still too wet inside or the old finish is still repelling, not ready. If it soaks in within a minute or so, the wood will accept stain.

Moisture-meter basics. A pin-type moisture meter takes the guesswork out: press it into a few boards in different spots (sun, shade, near the house). You generally want readings around 15% or below before staining. Meters are cheap at any hardware store, or we bring one.

Signs you're overdue. Water no longer beads on the surface, the color has gone gray, boards look dry and fuzzy, or hairline cracks are showing. Graying is UV damage to the wood surface, and in Texas, south- and west-facing boards gray a season or two ahead of everything else. Once cracks let water in, rot follows, so overdue is worth acting on.

How often, and what it costs

In our climate, decks generally benefit from re-staining every 2 to 3 years and fences every 3 to 5 years, depending on sun exposure and the product used. Horizontal surfaces (deck boards, rail caps, steps) wear fastest because they take direct sun and standing water.

*Typical ranges from our published pricing. Final price depends on size, condition and stain choice, send photos for an exact written estimate.

Prep is most of the job: cleaning off gray and mildew, sanding rough spots, and letting the wood dry before stain goes on. That's the difference between a finish that lasts three years and one that peels in one. If your deck is already gray or rough, see our deck staining & restoration service, a lot of "too far gone" decks just need proper prep and a few new boards.

Not sure whether yours needs a refresh or a rescue? Send us a couple photos for a free written estimate, we'll tell you honestly which it is.
