The Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 289-acre urban nature preserve and educational museum in McKinney along the Wilson Creek corridor southeast of downtown. It hosts 6 miles of nature trails winding through riparian woodland, restored prairie, and upland habitat, and is one of the few true wildlife sanctuaries in the DFW metro. The resident and migratory wildlife population includes white-tailed deer, river otters, and 240+ confirmed bird species.

Three distinct habitat types make up the trail network. The creek bottom trails along Wilson Creek offer bottomland hardwood with sycamore, cottonwood, and pecan canopy providing summer shade. The restored prairie section has seasonal wildflower blooms from March through May. The upland woodland in the north has the highest wildlife sighting frequency, particularly early mornings. The Heard's position on the Central Flyway migration corridor makes it a regular stop for serious birders from across the DFW region.
The Heard sits at the edge of McKinney's southeastern residential communities — Painted Tree, Westridge, and the newer developments along Hwy 380 growing south toward the Collin-Dallas county line. These neighborhoods skew toward young families who moved to McKinney from Allen, Plano, and Garland for more space. Young-family neighborhoods generate specific project types: cedar privacy fencing for backyard security, covered patios for outdoor entertaining, and playset-and-patio combinations.
